ITL Plans 25-Acre Global R&D Facility in Greater Noida

A Major Step Towards Next-Generation Farm Technology

Agriculture is rapidly changing. Farmers are increasingly looking for machinery that delivers better productivity, fuel efficiency, reliability, adaptability to different crops and farming conditions. Against this backdrop, investment in research and development has become increasingly important for the tractor and farm machinery industry.

ITL’s proposed Greater Noida facility is positioned as a major step in this direction. Sonalika has described the project as a new Engineering & Design Centre that will expand its world-class R&D ecosystem. This will strengthen its ability to develop heavy-duty tractor technologies. The company received an Eligibility Certificate from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in April 2026 for setting up the centre.

Greater Noida Emerging as an Agri-Technology Hub

The choice of Greater Noida is significant. The region is becoming an important industrial and technology destination, offering access to infrastructure, and a growing manufacturing ecosystem. ITL already has a presence in the Delhi-NCR region, while its existing R&D capabilities include centres in Delhi NCR and Hoshiarpur. According to Sonalika, these facilities are supported by more than 300 engineers. Working across areas such as tractor dynamics, ergonomics and digital integration. The Greater Noida project is expected to become the company’s biggest R&D centre, creating a stronger platform for future product development.

What Will the New R&D Centre Focus On?

The proposed facility is expected to focus on developing technologies that address the changing requirements of modern agriculture.

Key areas of innovation could include:

  • Advanced tractor engineering
  • Improved fuel efficiency and performance
  • Digital and connected tractor technologies
  • Operator comfort and ergonomics
  • Precision-oriented agricultural solutions
  • New-generation powertrain technologies
  • Solutions for diverse crops and farming conditions
  • Technologies designed for global agricultural markets

The objective is not simply to develop more tractors, but to create machinery that can solve real problems faced by farmers.

Strengthening Sonalika’s Global Ambitions

Sonalika has built a significant presence in international tractor markets and manufactures tractors across a wide horsepower range. The company says its product portfolio spans 20–120 HP, covering compact, medium and heavy-duty tractors. Its integrated manufacturing plant in Hoshiarpur is also a key part of its global production network. A larger engineering and design centre plays an important role in developing products suited to Indian farmers and also to diverse agricultural markets around the world. This could strengthen ITL’s ability to respond faster to changing customer requirements and global technology trends.

Uttar Pradesh Government’s Role

The project also highlights the growing importance of Uttar Pradesh as a destination for large-scale industrial and technology investments.

Raman Mittal, Joint Managing Director of International Tractors Limited, has expressed appreciation for the support and leadership of the Uttar Pradesh Government. He said the encouragement is motivating ITL to “think bigger, move faster, and build for the future.”

The state government’s support for the project reflects the broader push to attract manufacturing, investments into Uttar Pradesh.

Potential Economic Impact

Beyond product development, a large R&D facility can create opportunities for engineers, technical specialists, researchers, testing professionals and other skilled workers. Industry reports have estimated the proposed project at around ₹620 crore and suggested that it could generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. These figures have been reported by industry media and should be treated as estimates until officially confirmed by ITL. The project could also contribute to the development of a wider ecosystem involving component manufacturers, technology providers, testing facilities and engineering service companies.

Krishi Vikas View: Innovation Must Reach the Farm

At Krishi Vikas, the focus is on improving farmers’ access to tractors, implements, machinery and agricultural solutions. As farm mechanisation evolves, farmers will increasingly need better machines and right equipment for their crops, acreage and farming operations. For the agricultural sector, investments in R&D are meaningful only when innovation eventually reaches farmers. The emergence of large R&D investments such as ITL’s proposed Greater Noida centre signals that the next phase of Indian farm mechanisation will be driven by engineering, technology and farmer-focused innovation.

The Road Ahead

ITL’s proposed 25-acre Global R&D Facility represents an important step in the company’s broader innovation strategy. With Sonalika and Solis serving farmers across multiple markets, the new centre could become an important platform for developing the next generation of tractors and agricultural technologies.

The future of farming will depend not only on how much machinery farmers use, but on how intelligently that machinery is designed. As India moves towards more efficient and technology-driven agriculture, investments in research, engineering and product innovation play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of farm mechanisation.
