India Tractor Market Maintains 6.5% Growth in August 2026: ICRA

India’s tractor industry continued to expand in August 2026, with domestic wholesale tractor volumes rising 6.5% year-on-year (YoY), according to ICRA. Retail tractor sales also recorded growth, increasing 0.8% YoY. While growth has moderated from the exceptionally strong levels seen last year, the market continues to benefit from healthy agricultural production, government support and sustained mechanisation demand. Tractor Market Continues to Move Forward

Wholesale tractor volumes increased 6.5% YoY in August, reflecting continued demand for farm mechanisation. The moderation in growth comes against a strong comparison base. Tractor wholesale volumes had grown by 23.5% in FY2026, making the current year’s growth more of a normalisation after an exceptionally strong performance. For manufacturers and dealers, continued positive wholesale growth indicates that tractor demand remains active across the market.

ICRA Sees 1–4% Growth in FY2027

ICRA expects domestic tractor wholesale volumes to grow by around 1–4% in FY2027. The forecast reflects a more normal growth cycle after the strong expansion in FY2026. At the same time, Minimum Support Prices (MSP), agricultural subsidies and government initiatives can continue supporting farmer incomes and machinery purchases.

Strong Farm Output Supports Rural Demand

One of the biggest positives for the tractor industry is India’s agricultural production. According to the Third Advance Estimates released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare in May 2026, total foodgrain production for 2025–26 was estimated at a record 376.6 million tonnes, representing 5.3% YoY growth. Strong crop production can support farm cash flows and create a favourable environment for investment in tractors and other agricultural machinery.

Monsoon Remains an Important Growth Driver

Rainfall will remain an important factor for tractor demand during FY2027. While rainfall has been uneven in some regions, a favourable improvement in agricultural activity and crop conditions could support rural incomes and machinery demand. The diverse nature of India’s agricultural market also means regional demand can continue to create opportunities for tractor manufacturers and dealers.

Tractor Manufacturers Enter FY2027 on a Strong Base

ICRA expects tractor manufacturers, or original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), to maintain healthy financial profiles. Stable raw-material costs, operating leverage, healthy profitability and low debt levels are expected to support manufacturers’ financial performance. This provides companies with room to focus on new products, technology, rural distribution and mechanisation opportunities.

Growth Opportunities Ahead

India’s tractor market continues to benefit from several long-term trends:

  • Rising farm mechanisation
  • Demand for higher farm productivity
  • Government support for agricultural machinery
  • Strong foodgrain production
  • Replacement demand for ageing tractors
  • Growing use of tractors with multiple implements
  • Increasing mechanisation among small and medium farmers

Industry Perspective

The 6.5% wholesale growth in August shows that India’s tractor market continues to expand despite coming off a very strong FY2026 base.

ICRA’s 1–4% FY2027 growth outlook points towards a more sustainable growth phase rather than a halt in demand. With agricultural production, government support and mechanisation continuing to drive the sector, India’s tractor industry remains positioned for steady growth opportunities in FY2027.
