ITL and SP BKM Sign $120M Deal for Tractor Production in Kazakhstan

International Tractors Limited (ITL), the manufacturer of Sonalika and Solis tractors, is strengthening its international manufacturing presence with a $120 million agreement to assemble and produce tractors locally in Kazakhstan.

The agreement with Kazakhstani industrial company SP BKM was signed during the Kazakhstan-India Business, Trade and Investment Forum. The partnership will cover tractor supplies, local assembly, phased localisation of production, and the development of sales and after-sales service networks. For ITL, the deal represents a shift from simply exporting tractors to establishing a stronger local manufacturing and distribution presence in Central Asia. ITL and SP BKM Sign $120M Deal for Tractor Production in Kazakhstan

What Does the ITL-SP BKM Agreement Cover?

The $120 million agreement is designed to build a broader agricultural machinery ecosystem in Kazakhstan. Key areas include:

  • Assembly and local production of tractors
  • Gradual increase in local content
  • Supply of tractors and agricultural machinery
  • Development of sales and distribution networks
  • After-sales service and support

The phased localisation approach could allow ITL to build production capabilities in the market while developing a stronger local supply chain over time.

Why Kazakhstan Matters for ITL

Kazakhstan is one of the key agricultural markets in Central Asia, with large areas of farmland and demand for mechanised farming equipment. Establishing local production can give ITL closer access to customers while potentially improving supply-chain efficiency, product support and market responsiveness. The move could also strengthen the Sonalika and Solis brands across Central Asia, where demand for tractors and agricultural machinery presents further growth opportunities.

India-Kazakhstan Trade Push

The ITL-SP BKM agreement was part of a wider India-Kazakhstan business engagement. The Kazakhstan-India Business, Trade and Investment Forum brought together more than 110 participants from Kazakhstan, representing around 65 companies across sectors including engineering, agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals, construction, oil and gas, IT and logistics. Kazakhstan has also identified around 95 commodity categories with an estimated export potential of $313 million to India. These include metals, chemicals, food products, construction materials and engineering goods. The broader engagement highlights growing efforts to expand commercial ties between the two countries beyond traditional trade.

About SP BKM

SP BKM operates under TransTechMash LTD, a diversified Kazakhstani industrial group owned by businessman Marat Yessimseitov. The group has interests across railway equipment, defence, automotive and hospitality, including Terra Motors and Holiday Inn Express in Astana-Turan. Yessimseitov also founded BESQARU, a manufacturer of wheeled and tracked armoured vehicles, highlighting the group’s broader industrial capabilities.

What the Deal Means for India’s Tractor Industry

ITL’s Kazakhstan investment reflects a broader evolution in India’s tractor industry: Indian manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond exports toward overseas assembly, localisation and manufacturing partnerships. For tractor companies, establishing production closer to international customers can provide several advantages, including shorter supply chains, stronger dealer networks and better access to regional markets. For ITL, Kazakhstan could become an important manufacturing and distribution hub as the company looks to expand its global footprint.

Krishi Vikas Take

The $120 million ITL-SP BKM agreement is significant because it goes beyond conventional tractor exports. Local assembly, increasing localisation and the development of sales and service infrastructure indicate a longer-term commitment to the Kazakhstan market. For ITL, the partnership can strengthen its position in Central Asia while giving Sonalika and Solis a more established manufacturing base closer to international customers. For India’s tractor industry, the deal is another indication that “Made in India” agricultural machinery is increasingly moving from export markets to local production partnerships abroad.
