A woman operating a drone above a crop field represents a new opportunity for rural India: skilled work that connects agricultural technology with local enterprise. Through Namo Drone Didi, selected women’s self-help groups can become drone service providers, helping farmers access modern spraying equipment while building an additional source of income.

What Is Namo Drone Didi?
Namo Drone Didi is a Central Sector Scheme supporting selected women’s self-help groups, or SHGs, in providing agricultural drone services, primarily for spraying fertilisers and pesticides. The government approved an outlay of ₹1,261 crore for 2023–24 to 2025–26, with a target of providing 15,000 drones. This represents the approved target, rather than confirmed completed deliveries.
Financial Support and Training
Selected SHGs receive assistance covering 80% of the eligible drone package cost, capped at ₹8 lakh. Cluster Level Federations may finance the remaining procurement cost through the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, with 3% interest subvention. This provides support towards interest costs; it does not mean the final loan interest rate is necessarily 3%. The drone package includes 15 days of pilot training for a selected SHG member and five days of assistant training for another member or a family member. Training helps groups develop the skills needed to operate the equipment and support field activities.
What Can Farmers Gain?
The service model allows farmers to hire drone spraying services without purchasing and maintaining a drone themselves. This can make agricultural equipment more accessible where investment costs or labour availability are challenges. Drone spraying can potentially reduce the time required for suitable spraying tasks and the need for workers to carry equipment through crops. However, results depend on crop suitability, weather, field conditions and correct application practices. Higher yields and lower costs are not automatic outcomes.
Creating Opportunities for Rural Women
The programme creates a pathway for women to develop technical and business skills together. Alongside operating drones, participating groups must manage bookings, coordinate with farmers, maintain equipment and track expenses. These responsibilities can help women establish a stronger role as agricultural service providers and local entrepreneurs.
Krishi Vikas Perspective: Making Technology Accessible and Practical
The programme’s strongest opportunity lies in connecting modern equipment with everyday farming needs. Farmers need dependable local services, clear pricing and trained operators who can work within the required spraying window. A service-based approach can make technology useful to farmers who cannot justify purchasing equipment themselves. Its long-term value depends on reliable maintenance, suitable applications and enough local demand to sustain women-led businesses.
Building a Sustainable Service
Receiving a drone is the starting point. Regular bookings, transport, battery charging, spare parts and after-sales support are essential to keeping the service operational. Earnings will vary with seasonal demand and operating costs. Each group needs realistic pricing and financial planning to cover maintenance, labour and any loan repayments.
Namo Drone Didi brings agricultural technology and women’s livelihoods together. With effective training and dependable support, it can help rural women build viable service enterprises while expanding farmers’ access to modern agricultural practices.
