Mahindra Retains the Top Spot

As a result, Mahindra’s market share slipped from 24.45% to 23.91%, a decline of 0.53 percentage points. Despite the decline, Mahindra maintained a substantial lead over Swaraj. The data also indicates increasing competition at the top of the market, with several brands gaining share during the month.

Swaraj Strengthens Its Position

Swaraj recorded a positive August, selling 15,913 tractors, compared with 15,425 units in the same month last year. The brand added 488 units year on year, increasing its market share from 17.95% to 18.36%. The 0.41 percentage-point increase further strengthens Swaraj’s second position in the retail market.

Its market share declined from 12.91% to 12.45%, a reduction of 0.46 percentage points. In contrast, Escorts Kubota gained momentum. Its sales increased from 9,404 to 9,944 units, while market share improved from 10.95% to 11.47%. The brand nevertheless retained its position among India’s top five tractor manufacturers.

John Deere Faces the Highest YTD Share Decline Among Major Brands

India’s Tractor Market Analysis

1. Monthly growth is modest, but YTD growth is strong

August retail sales grew only 0.88%, but cumulative sales for April–August are up 20.60%. This suggests that the industry’s overall demand momentum remains considerably stronger than the August monthly figure alone indicates.

2. Market-share competition is intensifying

Sonalika, Swaraj, Escorts Kubota and New Holland gained market share in August, while Mahindra, Massey Ferguson, John Deere and Eicher lost share. On a YTD basis, Swaraj, Sonalika, Massey Ferguson and New Holland gained share, while Mahindra, Escorts Kubota, John Deere and Eicher saw declines.

3. The top two remain dominant

Mahindra and Swaraj together account for 42.44% of YTD retail tractor sales, demonstrating the scale of the two brands in India’s tractor market.

4. The middle of the market is highly competitive

The gap between the brands ranked third, fourth and fifth remains relatively narrow. Sonalika, Massey Ferguson and Escorts Kubota are competing closely for market share, making this segment particularly important for manufacturers and dealers.

Krishi Vikas Take

August 2026 shows a stable retail tractor market, but the YTD numbers remain encouraging. Industry sales are up 20.60% between April and August, even as August itself grew only 0.88%.

The bigger takeaway is the shift in market share. Swaraj and Sonalika have strengthened their positions, while New Holland is also gaining ground. At the same time, Mahindra continues to lead but has seen a modest reduction in YTD share.

For tractor manufacturers and dealers, the coming months will be important in determining whether the industry’s strong YTD performance can be sustained. Product availability, regional demand, financing, dealer reach and crop economics will remain key factors influencing retail conversion.
